New Client in the President’s Office - Chapter 22
President Fan, do you want some fried chicken?Shen Yan had just finished reflecting on her mistake when Zhou Xing assigned her a second task.
He asked her to contact Teacher Cheng and arrange for a car to pick them up from the airport in two hours.
Shen Yan swore she would complete this task flawlessly!
She quickly replied, “Got it,” and rushed to Cheng Rong’s desk.
“Teacher Cheng, Assistant Zhou asked me to contact you to arrange a car to pick up him and President Lu from the airport.”
Cheng Rong looked a bit surprised.
“Right now?”
Shen Yan nodded firmly.
“Yes, right now.”
Cheng Rong found it a little odd.
“Why did they suddenly decide to use a company car today?”
Shen Yan had no idea how to answer his question.
She stood by his desk for a moment, feeling worried.
Was there a problem arranging a car?
“Is there no available company car right now? Or is it too late to send one?”
She was nervous.
Cheng Rong waved his hand.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll contact the driver now.”
“That’s great.”
Seeing that Cheng Rong was already calling the driver to arrange the pickup, Shen Yan returned to her desk.
After finishing his call, Cheng Rong called out to her again.
“Xiao Shen, I’ll send you the car plate number and the driver’s contact information in a bit.
Also, remember to fill out a vehicle dispatch form for me later.”
Shen Yan blinked.
“Vehicle dispatch form?”
Cheng Rong nodded.
“Yes, I’ll send it to you later.
Fill it out, print it, and get signatures from Assistant Zhou and Director Fan.”
Shen Yan made an “OK” gesture to show she understood.
When she received the form from Cheng Rong, she carefully filled in all the necessary details.
After completing it, she clicked print and walked over to the printer to retrieve it.
On her way back, she passed by Jian Hong’s desk and stopped out of curiosity.
“Sister Jian, our company follows the rules so strictly?
President Lu doesn’t even have his own dedicated car and driver?”
Jian Hong looked around to make sure no outsiders were present.
Then, cautiously, she walked over to the office door and checked the lock.
Only after confirming everything was safe did she lean in and reply,
“He should have one.”
Shen Yan: ?
Seeing her confusion, Jian Hong repeated,
“Logically speaking, President Lu should have his own car and driver.”
Shen Yan tried to process it.
“But he doesn’t…?”
Jian Hong nodded.
“Figure it out?”
Shen Yan shook her head.
“Nope.”
Jian Hong: …
“Ugh, why are you playing riddles with the kid?”
Meng Gulan, who had been listening, joined in and explained.
“Xiao Shen, you’ve probably noticed that there are power struggles in our company, right?”
Shen Yan nodded.
She had sensed it and had even heard hints about it from Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng.
“The board of directors the old men in charge are unhappy with President Lu’s decision to acquire Shenyu Technology and shift the company’s direction.
So every year, they send a third-party audit team to scrutinize his work.
On the surface, they call it ‘establishing internal control measures.’
But in reality, they’re just looking for excuses to get rid of him.”
Shen Yan immediately understood.
“So Director Fan represents the old board members?”
Meng Gulan confirmed.
“Exactly.
The two departments he oversees our President’s Office and Finance are both managed by President Lu’s close allies.
He was sent here specifically to keep an eye on them.”
Shen Yan suddenly felt a little scared.
“This morning, when Director Fan praised me in the group chat…
Could it be…?”
Was he trying to win her over?
Meng Gulan clicked her tongue.
“Hard to say.
Just watch his actions and see what he does next.”
Shen Yan felt even more uneasy.
“And if he does try something…?”
She just wanted a peaceful job and had no intention of getting involved in these power struggles.
Meng Gulan patted her shoulder.
“Jian Hong, Cheng Rong, and I have worked under the old President Lu for many years.
We’re firmly on his side.
But you’re young.
You can choose whichever side you want or not pick a side at all.”
Jian Hong agreed with Meng Gulan’s last statement.
“We don’t have much choice we’ve already been labeled.
But at the end of the day, we’re just here to work and make a living.
As long as we get paid and our benefits are in place, why should we care about office politics?”
Shen Yan completely agreed with that sentiment and nodded.
“Yeah, I just want a stable job that isn’t too exhausting.”
Meng Gulan reassured her.
“Don’t worry too much.
If Director Fan ever puts pressure on you or says anything suspicious, just go along with it for now.
Then report it to Assistant Zhou afterward.
That way, you won’t offend either side.”
Shen Yan found their advice incredibly valuable.
Feeling grateful, she decided to treat her new friends to some fried chicken.
Since today was Wednesday, she went all out and ordered a feast.
The delivery was quick, and within half an hour, buckets of fried chicken and bottles of soda arrived at the office.
She intentionally ordered extra so that her new friends could enjoy it before President Lu and Zhou Xing returned.
She sent a message to her internal work chat, calling for Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng to join them on the 19th floor.
Since they were free, they immediately took the elevator up.
They placed the food on an unoccupied desk, which was where they usually put snacks instead of using the pantry.
As soon as Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng arrived, their eyes lit up at the sight of the fried chicken.
Shen Yan was about to invite them to dig in when an unexpected guest appeared at the office door.
“Good afternoon, Director Fan.”
The three of them greeted him immediately.
Fan Mingxu glanced at Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng, then at the notebook in Xing Ning’s hands.
Xing Ning quickly explained,
“We came up to see Shen Yan.
We had some questions about reimbursements.”
Fan Mingxu nodded without saying anything and walked toward Cheng Rong’s desk.
With him lingering around, eating felt awkward.
Shen Yan whispered to them,
“Maybe you should head back downstairs for now?
I’ll call you up again when he leaves.”
Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng exchanged glances and, without hesitation, left.
Thankfully, Xing Ning had brought a notebook, making their presence seem more legitimate.
Shen Yan made a mental note—next time she slacked off and visited other departments, she should bring a notebook too.
After Fan Mingxu finished speaking with Cheng Rong, he finally left the office.
To be sure, Shen Yan pretended to go to the restroom but actually waited outside to confirm that he had gotten into the elevator.
Once she was certain, she sent a message:
“All clear.”
Xing Ning and Qian Xiafeng returned, finally able to enjoy their fried chicken.
But just as they were happily eating and drinking soda, Fan Mingxu appeared at the door again.
Shen Yan: …
Xing Ning: …
Qian Xiafeng: …
Even Fan Mingxu, locking eyes with Xing Ning, seemed at a loss for words.
Shen Yan nearly dropped her chicken.
How could this situation get any more awkward?
Just yesterday, she swore not to “badmouth” Fan Mingxu for a week.
Then, Xing Ning bravely spoke up.
“Director Fan, would you like some fried chicken?”
She even extended the bucket toward him, sincerely offering him a piece.
Fan Mingxu hesitated.
Caught off guard, he seemed to forget what he was about to say.
After an awkward pause, he forced a smile.
“No thanks.
I have high cholesterol.”
He then quickly walked past them again.
The moment he left, the office burst into laughter.
“Xing Ning, you’re amazing!”
