I May Be a Virtual Youtuber, but I Still Go to Work - Chapter 106

After spending the entire weekend feeling like I was flying high, Monday hit me like a brick wall the moment I stepped into the office on time.

“The producer agreed that we should keep your identity a secret! He thinks it’ll be entertaining!” my boss chirped as soon as I walked in.

So, instead of me, the first generation, another version of me was accepted by CAT. It was the first official announcement, and it all came together in less than 24 hours. Talk about speedy!

“Did you contact them today?” I asked, a bit taken aback.

“Well, it’s better to reach out quickly; otherwise, it looks like we’re unprepared, right?”

“True,” I nodded.

“Set up a stage name or something. Best to pretend to be an utaite slated for debut. It’s your area of expertise,” he said, as if handing me a golden ticket.

I was half-expecting him to come back with a boatload of conditions, but surprisingly, he just asked me to come up with a name.

“Thanks for your generous spirit!”

“Sure, it’s all in a day’s work.”

“Coming up with a VTuber name is my specialty… I mean, there are plenty of people who were utaite in their past lives, so it shouldn’t be too hard.”

“Exactly! But keep in mind it will take a while for them to prepare songs and such. So you’ve got at least a month to do your vocal training with the other members.”

“Right!”

VTuber naming conventions vary by group, but for our first generation, we borrowed from the naming style used back in Japan. Take Akari Dora, for example—her key color is red, so from there we get “Akari,” and since she’s a laid-back dragon, we pull “Dora” from dragon.

Now, just calling her “Dora” sounds weirdly Korean, but that’s the point—it’s localized while retaining a hint of the original!

I named one of the members “Shirahoshi Momo,” hoping she’d achieve global recognition like our esteemed president.

However, the naming trend for utaite is a tad different. Typically, the names are short, sweet, and can be transliterated in Korean, Japanese, and English all at once.

I felt like pulling something from F participant’s name, but the only thing that popped into my head was “Fan-ssi.”

“Well, it’s not urgent,” I said to myself.

For now, I should focus on preparing for my upcoming broadcast, where I’d unveil the members’ Valentine’s cover songs and their new outfits next week.

Before announcing the content to the viewers, my boss suggested I play a game solo first to stir up some buzz. Apparently, this way, more people would help spread the word that “F and Majia are not the same person.”

Usually, weeks prior to participating in content like the <It’s Official!> event, players would drop hints like “I’m participating in that content!” while playing games—but now it was my turn!

So today, I left Seungyeon alone in the Monitoring Room and switched the broadcast on.

— ?

— What’s going on?

— Is this your first time doing a battle call on stream? LOL

— Did you just suddenly start the battle call?

With the members growing quickly, their average viewer counts hovered around 6,000. But here I was, at nearly 8,000! And I hadn’t even been chatting much since I was focused on the game, and it was only 4 PM on a weekday!

The recent illegal duet and interest in participant F were evident in those numbers.

Funny enough, after getting used to seeing five-digit numbers, this number felt oddly small. Maybe it was because the chat was flying by so quickly that I found myself relaxed for a solo broadcast, despite it being my first time.

Even the managers hadn’t left yet since the members hadn’t started their broadcasts, so no one was trying to blind me with messages or ban users.

When did they all get so quick? They used to be slower than me!

Anyway, given the supportive environment, I dove into my game, and my mutterings dwindled even further.

To break the ice, generous donations came pouring in. Yet, thanks to the recent influx of viewers, many didn’t seem to know when to expect my reactions.

:: A donation of 1,000 clouds from an anonymous patron! ::

:: Excuse me, can I ask why you’re doing a battle call today? ::

I ignored this one—nothing related to members, so no answer.

:: A donation of 1,000 clouds from an anonymous patron! ::

:: Can I participate in an illegal viewer challenge now? ::

That was a viewer’s personal choice, so I ignored it too. They just need to come in and not break my focus; if they try to, I’d break them first!

:: A donation of 1,000 clouds from an anonymous patron! ::

:: My teeth have never looked so bright and clear thanks to Jia! ::

You’re banned! Comparisons amongst members, I can handle, but drawing comparisons to me? That’s crossing a line!

We only do positive vibes here!

As I typed and game-played my way through the two-and-a-half-hour stream, I launched at some illegal viewer challenges—(there was a clip that showed how someone else started the chaos first).

When I felt I’d given enough time for the viewer challenges, I flipped into a ranked game, laughing to myself.

— Wow!

— The moves are insane!

— Is this the signal flare for Battle Coliseum? 😱

— How long did you hold back in competitive?

— How do you even do this in competitive? 😂

— I REALLY need to eat dinner after this!

— Someone’s going off today, huh? 😂

— Best I’ve seen on screen!

— Can’t you show your keyboard separately?

— Can you even become a VTuber doing this? 😂

— Smoke grenade combat is godlike and invincible!!!

I showcased my skills to the influx of viewers.

I needed to clarify that the upcoming content was seriously a “real game” and not just hot air. If I just jump into, “Hey everyone, I’ll do 2:87 and go karaoke as a punishment,” it wouldn’t hold up at all!

Majia would again throw out ridiculous terms just to toy with us!

But then again, there was no way to twist my boss’s arm too hard on that!

Anyway, after proving my worth, I knew it was time to transition into discussing our upcoming content.

With an hour remaining until the members’ broadcasts started, I had to relay the news first so as not to interfere with their stream!

“Just a heads up, the collective cover song for the first generation will be out on Wednesday, and the new outfits will drop on Friday!”

— Ohhhh

— We know, we know!

— Yes

— Can’t wait!

“The cover will go live this Wednesday at 8 PM, and the new outfits will drop on Friday from 6 PM over the course of an hour. You all know the concepts, right? We put a LOT of effort into the new outfits, so show them some love!”

— LOL

— Spilling the secrets again, huh?

— I knew it!

“And next Monday, we plan to have a small event to celebrate the new outfits!”

— Huh?

— What’s new?

— What else is there?

— Parallel is really working their butts off these days!

I showed them a PPT I’d prepared ahead of time. I planned to show it half-baked, but suddenly, our team leader Ra Seunghyeon snatched it up, working her magic and turning it into a slick, expert-designed masterpiece.

“Introducing, <Defeat the Majia>!”

A viewer challenge content where I’ll face off against the whole Parallel crew in the Battle Coliseum.

If I win, 20 random viewers will receive a merchandise package valued at 200,000 won along with the new outfits.

But if I lose and don’t win even once in ten games?

I’ll be doing karaoke as a punishment for two straight hours right after the content wraps.

In other words, viewers can now play detective—was I really participant F in the illegal duet?

I threw down a challenge, daring anyone to find out.

As if my intent worked, the reactions poured in right after.

— No way!

— Are you serious?

— How do I hold back on this?

— Are you lying?

— Gotta watch out for more lies.

— Yeah, I won’t believe it~

— Why would I trust those words? 😂

— Oh man, are they actually going to bite this bait?

— No way! 😂

— You’ll regret it when it hits!

— LOL, hold on for a moment while I prepare!

— Here we go again with another wild claim!

So this is just a promotional content for the new outfits, huh? 😂

I won’t actually break a sweat while pretending to sing, so if I fall for it again, I’m really just a fool!

— Parallel912: One last time, I’ll fall for it.

— Parallel785: So you’re not going to watch the broadcast?

N Parallel311 (Author): Gotta watch it, don’t I?

N Parallel311 (Author): But I’m not participating.

N Parallel311 (Author): Doesn’t feel like you’d follow through with the punishment.

N Parallel009: The guy is just fast-talking; he’s never broken a promise, right?

N Parallel009: This time, it feels different, though! 😂

N Parallel311 (Author): Well, I have overtime that day…

[Once it’s confirmed that Majia = F is really blown open]

Can we send a truck to Parallel to promote Majia’s debut?

Honestly, if the singing is that good, it totally should be a debut, right?

I love how often they broadcast now, but it’s barely about the content I crave…

I want to see Majia play games, sing, be adorable, and hang out with us!

[Comments]

— Parallel004: If we raise money for a truck, I’ll help with loading and unloading.

— Parallel713: For real!

— 🟦Parallel03: Definitely has to debut!

N Parallel949: Wouldn’t it be nice to drop the buzz about Majia’s debut?

N 🟦Parallel03: Seems like there’s always someone to reignite the flames! Does pushing for this even matter?

N Parallel021: 😂😂😂

N Parallel514: LOL!

N Parallel812: It’s clear someone’s getting agitated! 😂

N 🟧Parallel1: I’ll set them on fire!

N 🟧Parallel1: The gallery leader is causing chaos as usual.

N Parallel835: 😂 Did Ju-Dang just give up on this?

N Parallel451: The gallery is totally crashing! 😱
