Since I Became a Woman, I’ll Do Cosplay - Chapter 81
Dr. Scarlett, Part 3“Dr… what?”
“-Vtubers… are weird…”
“-What the hell is this?”
Naturally, early Korean Vtubers faced this kind of reaction when introducing their RP. Korean Vtubers were mostly established no-cam streamers who simply adopted avatars, so explaining a separate RP seemed unnecessary.
This made it awkward for “pure” Vtubers who debuted with established RPs.
Introducing an RP was standard practice internationally, but the existing streamers had already set the precedent in Korea, making it feel redundant for newcomers.
Perhaps in 2025, such introductions would be met with memes like “Oh, that’s the setting?” or “Perfectly understood,” but right now, those memes hadn’t taken hold yet.
Calm down. Just ignore the comments about the concept and follow the script. They’re reacting negatively because they don’t understand. A few years from now, these same people will be obsessed with Vtubers.
Hayoon sent a direct message to Hong Seo-hyun, advising her to ignore those comments. With the DM window open on her second monitor, there was no risk of notifications appearing on stream.
Scarlet’s eyes flickered to the side, as if checking the message, then returned to the camera with a chuckle.
“As you know, I’m a singer, an Utaite. But unlike typical singers, I’m only active on YouTube, so I started streaming.”
It was a perfectly normal reason. Scarlet, blinking her red eyes and shaking her head before smiling brightly, explained her debut in much the same way as other Utaites.
The key difference was that she had created a virtual avatar based on her own character.
-It’s interesting seeing the character move.
-Is this a Vtuber?
-Hey, it’s not ‘character,’ it’s Scarlet-nim.
-Wow, 13 chickens!
-Love your songs, tuned in for the stream.
The chat was still confused, but there was no extreme backlash. This was thanks to Hayoon and Hong Seo-hyun carefully calibrating the RP. Using the standard Utaite debut explanation as a foundation.
“Honestly, I’m pretty good at Japanese, and I’m good at adapting Japanese songs into Korean. So, my streams will be focused on music-related content.”
She started introducing the core elements of Scarlet’s RP. The use of the word “content” was a deliberate attempt to find common ground between the Vtuber viewers who enjoyed RP and the general audience.
“That’s why I’m Dr. Scarlet, a multi-lingual expert in Korean, Japanese, and music.”
She emphasized the “doctor” aspect of her identity.
-Why are you so obsessed with the “doctor” thing?
-Are you an elementary school kid?
-If you’re a doctor, then your fan cafe is a lab, and your fans are grad students?
“Oh, that’s a good idea. Should I make the fan cafe a lab and the fan name ‘grad students’?”
-This is insane.
-Crazy b*tch LOL.
The backlash was inevitable since she was debuting with a distinct RP, especially when the stream hadn’t found its footing yet. But.
“It’s okay to make fun of me, but please keep it clean. You know what I mean?”
-Ah, sure.
-We know where the line is.
-Her voice is really nice, though.
To set the tone for the stream early on, Hong Seo-hyun pleaded with the viewers in the gentle voice she had practiced with Hayoon, asking them to refrain from harsh language.
“I’ll figure things out as I go, but if I’m doing something wrong, please give me constructive feedback on the fan cafe I’ll be creating soon! If it gets too frustrating, I’ll have ‘vent days’ where you can let it all out. Deal?”
-Hmm, deal?
-The way the drawing moves is strangely immersive.
-Hmm…hmm…hmm…
She even mentioned the ‘vent days’ they had planned, showcasing the results of her training with Hayoon with her smooth streaming.
“Now, now, look at this.”
Hong Seo-hyun typed a quick announcement.
[Chicken Giveaway! One chicken per 100 followers and viewers! Draw tomorrow, on the second day of the stream!!]
-Wooo!
-Let’s go!
-Chicken sounds good.
First, the announcement the freeloaders were waiting for. Next…
[Newcomer Orientation – Introducing Scarlet]
-6 PM
“For those of you in school or at work, the official newcomer orientation will begin at 6 PM.”
The main event of today’s stream. The newcomer orientation.
-????
-????
-Huh?
-If the main event is at 6 PM, why did you start streaming at noon?
-Well, it’s 1 PM now…
-What are you doing for five hours?
-Do you even have a plan?
The problem was the 6 PM start time for the orientation. The viewers were immediately hooked.
Scarlet cleared her throat, grinned, and narrowed her red eyes.
“Actually, I’ve barely spoken for the past two days just for today. To save my voice.”
-?
-Ah, I think I get it…
-Is she crazy?
“Yes! You guessed it!”
As Scarlet declared confidently, a gym ball dropped from the classroom ceiling, transforming the background into a karaoke room. A microphone appeared in front of Scarlet.
“From now until 5:30 PM, non-stop karaoke! And at 6 PM, we’ll start the newcomer orientation!”
-Wow LOL.
-So bold.
-She’s going to fill four and a half hours by herself?
The chat exploded at Hong Seo-hyun’s bold declaration. A disco-style MR started playing, and then.
“Hello!”
She began with a powerful shout.
“I’m so happy that my dream debut has finally arrived! Woohoo!”
The song request stream, starting with a familiar college music festival song (albeit slightly edited), raced towards 5:30 PM.
A non-stop karaoke stream until 5:30 PM. This insane strategy for a debut stream was Hayoon’s calculated move.
First, a longer stream meant more opportunities for the chicken giveaway.
Some might think giving away so much chicken was a loss, but…
With a boost to 1,500 concurrent viewers and 2,500 followers, giving away 40 chickens would allow them to dominate online communities and generate further buzz.
Besides, the phrase “debut stream” itself was clickbait. Moreover, since Vtubers were still a novelty in Korea, it was a perfect environment to attract viewers.
So, to maximize this, Scarlet needed to stream for as long as possible, but…
Given Hong Seo-hyun’s lack of streaming experience, that was impossible. Hence, the vocal endurance challenge.
“When morning comes, I’ll take you with me, dancing into the future, the weekend crossroads start here!”
Naturally, the song choices were mostly easy-listening tunes. Even with a healthy voice, singing for hours would strain her throat.
The main event, the newcomer orientation, hadn’t even started yet, and she still had to sing a few more songs at the end of the stream, so they chose songs that were easy on the throat, even including some auto-tuned tracks.
-How many songs has she sung?
-No idea, over 20, I think.
-Her voice is so good, though.
-So good.
Hong Seo-hyun captivated her audience with her voice alone. Easy listening didn’t mean low quality, and Hong Seo-hyun’s voice elevated even simple songs. Viewers who initially came out of curiosity stayed, listening to the stream like a radio.
‘1,200 viewers…!’
Hayoon cheered internally at the viewer count, which had surpassed 1,000.
Even if it doesn’t increase anymore, this is a huge success.
1,200 concurrent viewers meant at least 1,500 people had tuned in. She already had over 1,500 followers. This was an incredible start for a small, independent Vtuber in Korea’s nascent Vtuber scene.
“Haa… I’m exhausted… let’s take a break and chat. I have a new song coming out at the end of this month.”
-????
-Song?
-Don’t you always release songs?
“No, not a cover. An original song. I’m a virtual music doctor; I need my own song, don’t I?”
It was 5 PM.
Hong Seo-hyun skillfully delivered her lines, building anticipation for the newcomer orientation and subtly dropping the news about her original song.
“So I made one.”
It seemed like her sly personality was perfect for being a Vtuber.
